Why have you chosen to climb in the Shine On! Fuji Challenge?

Prior to moving to Tokyo, I worked as a special education teacher and an alternative education instructor. Children that are struggling have always held a special place in my heart. The climb to the top of Mt Fuji, will be challenging, but not nearly as difficult as what these children with cancer go through every day.

Do you have a message for your supporters?

I hope that our hike to the top will help the Tyler Foundation provide care and assistance to a few of these special children. Please make a pledge to help!

Why have you chosen to climb in the Shine On! Fuji Challenge?

We are excited to participate in the 2012 Shine On! Fuji Challenge because we love hiking around Mt. Fuji as a family, but I have not yet climbed to the top (Paul has once already). Our close friends from the US lost their 7-year old daughter to cancer in 2007, which has increased our awareness of the devastation cancer can cause. We couldn’t think of a better way to climb Mt. Fuji than to simultaneously support an organization which helps to improve the lives of children with cancer and their families. Shine On!

Why have you chosen to climb in the Shine On! Fuji Challenge?

I have worked with youth in Japan in educational settings for several years. I will probably relocate to the U.S. in the near future. I have performed some tasks here that I consider accomplishments, but climbing Fuji is not yet one of them. I learned of the work of the Tyler Foundation from Half-Fast Cycling. I hope that climbing Fuji will enable me to contribute to their work, to express my thanks for the current good health of my own children, and to make my experience of Japan more complete.

Do you have a message for your supporters?

I strongly encourage everyone to contribute to the work of the Tyler Foundation by participating in this climb, especially experienced mountaineers. As an alternative, please support at least one of the challengers. The love you take is equal to the love you make.

Why have you chosen to climb in the Shine On! Fuji Challenge?

I came to Tokyo recently after I got a transfer from my employer Mediacom (Group M). I read about Tyler Foundation and was very impressed with the innovative activities that they are doing to boost the courage of children who are undergoing cancer treatment. I choose to climbing in the Shine On! Fuji Challenge because I want to make those children feel that it’s not just them – everybody is fighting for their life every day and with every new sunrise comes a new life in everybody’s life. I want to view the sun rise from the summit of Mt. Fuji and will carry beads of courage to the summit and give the beads to children who are in the course of treatment for a beautiful sunrise every morning!

Cyclists Shine On! Up Mt. Norikura

On 28th & 29th July, 2012, Tokyo-based Half-Fast Cycling held the Shine On! Cycle Challenge in Norikura, to raise money for Tyler Foundation.
This annual event, in its fourth year, brought together 34 cyclists with a wide range of experience and ability, pledging their personal challenges to the Beads of Courage® program and other Tyler Foundation activities.

On day one, three groups tackled rides of 130 km, 85 km, and 15 km, through the July heat and, for the last few, rain. The group stayed overnight at the friendly and supportive NorthStar lodge in Norikura Kogen, Nagano Prefecture, before heading to the top of the mountain pass, on the border with Gifu Prefecture, on day two.

A wonderful time was had by all, and the event raised a total donation of
JPY 212,408 for Tyler Foundation.
