Why have you chosen to run in the Tokyo Shine On! Marathon Challenge?

I have always loved to run for exercise and for fun. I also love any kind of challenge! I feel that I have been truly blessed in my life so I cannot think of a better way to spend my time than running this Tokyo Shine On! Marathon Challenge 2012 for such a great cause knowing that it will bring some hope and sunshine to so many beautiful little children.

Do you have a message for your supporters?

Please come out and cheer on all the great runners that will be participating in the Tokyo Shine On! Marathon Challenge 2012! Every little or big voice makes a huge difference when you are running 26.2 miles… just like every little or big donation makes a huge difference in the lives of each of the sick children that we help through the Tyler Foundation! Why have you chosen to run in the Tokyo Shine On! Marathon Challenge?

I’ve run the marathon in Tokyo 3 times before and its a great event but figured I should try and run for a charity this year and I dont know of a better cause than the Tyler Foundation.

Why have you chosen to run in the Tokyo Shine On! Marathon Challenge?

Adventurous discover!!!  I enjoy the simplicity of running and the challenge of training for a marathon.  I like the feeling of setting a difficult goal and figuring out how to achieve.  I also like to meet other people preparing for big challenges, whether a marathon, or other big goal as theyinspire me to dream even bigger dreams.

Do you have a message for your supporters?

Difficult goals consume great amounts of energy and sacrifice, however once you push through the hardest/toughest parts, you prove to yourself that you are also special…and that lesson prepares you to take on even bigger challenges, and dream even bigger dreams.

Children smile with magic and games

Tyler Foundation’s Shine On! Smile Ambassador visits nusry school

Gaetano Totaro – Guy, the Tyler Foundation’s Shine On! Smile Ambassador, provides the opportunity for children to forget their worries through magic and games. On January 17, he visited 82 children and the principal of a nursery school in Kamaishi in Koshi-cho.

Having visited several times already, he is quite a popular guest now. On this visit, he performed a magic show and played games with the children.

One of the activites was a painting exercise in which the children rearranged basic shapes such as a circle, square, into their own image. In addition to being fun, this activity exercises children’s creativity. One of the children named _____(5 years old) drew a picture of himself taking shower by developing his idea from the picture of triangle and circle. He was delighted with the results and said, “I’m happy I could draw well. I also had fun playing with the parachute.”

Through the Tyler Foundation’s Shine On! Smile Ambassador Program, large groups of children are being supported in the Tohoku region. Guy travels through various parts of the Tohoku region on a regular basis visiting places such as shelters and offers performance which helps in psychological recovery.
Guy told us “Smile is the best medicine. I want children to always remember smiling at anytime even in the difficulty of moving forward.”

Today we had a lot of fun at the Shine On! House creating a unique toy and playing games nobody ever heard of before. Everyone’s eyes were sparkling with excitement for what they experienced for the first time.

First, everyone played Fukuwarai, roughly translated as Make-A-Face game. The adults closed their eyes while trying to place pieces of the face on Okame, a fictional and comical looking Japanese woman. There were plenty of round-shaped parts, so the adults seemed to be confused where to place them. Those who did not have their eyes closed were giving advice, but the outcome was very strange.

“Could this part be an eye?”

” No, that’s an ear ! ”

“Does it look like a mole ?”

“Well, it could also be an earring.”

Everyone had a good laugh.

We also had a lot of fun playing the original version of Sugoroku (similar to Snakes and Ladders) and Bear’s Hide-And-Seek.

After playing games, the children created their own original faces. They chose one sheet of paper for a face, and one child decided to do the cat theme. That child made four different types of cat pupils : daytime pupils, night pupils, shining pupils and heart-shaped pupils. Eight other long and thin parts became whiskers and eyebrows.

All of the children had great energy throughout the day! Thank you to all the children and their families for their participation.

Comments by the family joined us.

We all enjoyed playing Sugoroku ! We enjoyed making strange faces, and a person next to me patted me on the head… not a moment passed without laughing ! This year’s programme was a lot of fun as well, and we enjoyed everything we did at the event.

I always look forward to visiting the Shine On ! House before heading back home.

Shine On! Therapy Dog, Bailey, at Shizuoka Children's Hospital

The Tyler Foundation’s Shine on! Therapy Dog Program is looking for new therapy dog handlers. Are you ready to try a new challenge with these therapy dogs who are working in hospitals everyday?

Conditions:

• Native level Japanese ability
• Valid visa
• Qualified nurse (in Japan)
• Clinical experience (in Japan)
• Job location: Shizuoka
• Those who can live with therapy dogs
• Japanese driver’s license
• Those who can support the principles of the Tyler Foundation

Shine On! Therapy Dog Bailey, usually works at the Shizuoka Children’s Hospital, but today he went to the Shine On! House. When he arrived at the Shine On! House, five families were eagerly waiting to meet him. Each family had the opportunity to spend some quality time with him.

Mr. Sawai, the photographer of Bailey’s book, took photos for the families. Mr. Sawai has been taking cover photos of the Japanese magazine “Hiyoko club.” His photos were an amazing reminder of the families’ time with Bailey.

Tyler Foundation supports not only the children but also their families who are making an effort every day. Thank you very much to all the participants and the photographer Mr. Sawai.
