On June 23, 2009 the Tyler Foundation celebrated the official opening of the Shine On! House with a visit from MVP Ogasawara-senshu of the Yomiuri Giants. There was a ribbon cutting by Ogasawara, Kim Forsythe, Executive Director of the Tyler Foundation, and, of course, the children! There were also gifts from Ogasawara made from his old bats, and a treasure hunt game with Ogasawara and the children. Patients, their siblings and parents joined the fun! The Shine On! House – a complete support facility for kids with cancer and their families - has been a year in the making. The Tyler Foundation scholarship program for post-graduate nursing certifications in pediatric oncology is pleased to announce the award of two scholarships for 2009. The Tyler Foundation honored two Certified Nurse Specialist (CNS) scholars Yuka Saito and Jyun Yokoi. The goal of the scholarships is to encourage more nurses to pursue pediatric oncology certification since, in Japan, nursing specialization and seeking advanced nursing qualifications are still quite uncommon. Having a true specialist on a nursing team is a huge benefit to patients and can improve the overall effectiveness of medical staff. Both Saito and Yokoi will receive a scholarship to pursue post-graduate studies in pediatric oncology and will also participate in Tyler Foundation events. It is very exciting that they will help spread the word about the Tyler Foundation in their universities and in the hospitals where they will eventually work.

The Tyler Foundation is a Japan-based nonprofit organization supporting children with cancer and their families in Japan.
For kids in hospital... a visit with a favorite cartoon character can help them to smile all week long.
For parents... being able to stay close by the hospital at a reasonable cost, gives them one less thing to worry about.
For some cancer patients... finding a matching bone marrow donor or cord blood can mean a cure.
From helping families find counseling, to providing grants for life-saving research... the Tyler Foundation will make a difference.
