Kamasami Kong, DJ
KAMASAMI KONG has been doing radio programs and has appeared on dozens of record albums and TV shows in Japan since 1978. He’s currently heard on more than 38-radio stations daily throughout Japan on the JFN network and has a #1 rated jazz program every Saturday night on TOKYO-FM sponsored by The Cotton Club. He also hosts the syndicated “Kamasami Kong Show” which is heard weekly in most major cities in Japan. In addition to broadcasting, he also produces and hosts a weekly podcast sponsored by American Airlines based on stories in METROPOLIS magazine.
Kong is perfectly qualified to be a judge because while he was a DJ in Hawaii he created the wildly popular, #1 rated “Telephone Talent Show” which he gradually fashioned into Hawaii’s longest running and most successful high-school talent show called “BROWNBAGS TO STARDOM.”Winners from each school were invited to a professional recording studio to record their songs. The songs were then put onto an album which Kong has his DJ’s play in a high rotation on Hawaii’s then #1 rated KIKI radio. The songs became hits, the albums sold briskly and all the money went to charity. The young artists became so popular that Kong created an annual concert at the Waikiki Shell to showcase the talent, and then turned those events into annual TV specials.
When asked to comment about tonight’s competition, Mr. Kong said, “I love to watch talent at this level, of course I love to watch professionals perform too, but talent at this level is more interesting because you never know what might happen, but most hopefully, a new star will be born.”
