Sports Extravaganza 2006

The organizers of the Tyler Foundation’s first Sports Extravaganza are proud to announce that the weekend was a resounding success! We must thank our core organizing team of Rob Quinlivan, Mark McTamney and Anton McCloy for their tireless work in ensuring that both guests and celebrities had a great time while raising heaps of money for the Foundation.  We’ve got loads of photos and video to organize and pages of numbers to crunch - so please check back here on October 16th for the complete event report!


Celebrity Sports Dinner

Over three-hundred and sixty (wow!!!) people attended the Celebrity Sports Dinner at the Grand Hyatt, Tokyo.  The word about town is that everyone had a great time - even those from non-cricketing nations (Ah-hem, you Americans!).  Not only was the food awesome (we knew it would be) but the evening was truly unique among Tokyo events.  The celebs strutted their stuff (verbally, that is) on stage, MC Justin Sampson had everyone laughing as he led us though heads and tails games, interviews and the live auction, and Tyler’s mom, Kim, inadvertently drew a few tears from the audience as she reminded everyone of the greater purpose of the evening.  Thanks to all who attended, our volunteers and to our most generous sponsors and winning bidders in the auction.

Celebrity Golf Day

Everyone (even those who only got an hour or two of sleep after the Sports Dinner!) enjoyed a great day of golf at the beautiful (but challenging, laments Kim) Seve Ballesteros Golf Club.  The Grand Prize winners of the day were Barry Richards’ team, comprising Barry, David Moffat, Julia Spotswood and Garett Lake.  They won golf bags donated by Callaway Golf and Coca Cola Japan. A highlight of the day was Kapil Dev’s gross 73, which saw him win the best gross of the day! Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Imprint, Jack Nicklaus Golf Center and Devere and Partners made the day even more fun with their respective challenges on their sponsored holes.


Celebrity Cricket Match

Hundreds of people braved the rain to support the biggest cricket game ever in Japan hosted by the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club!  The Mike Gatting XI got off to a flyer and put on a competitive 288 off their 40 overs.  After a dodgy start, the Kapil Dev XI reeled in the challenging total with Tim O’Gorman from Derbyshire, England leading the way with a cool 104. During the lunch for players and VIPs sponsored by CareerCross, the spectators were treated to a performance of the Y.I.S. band - followed by photo ops with Miss Universe Japan, Kurara Chibana!  Definitely a great start to what everyone hopes will become an annual event!
